El Niño 2026: A Powerful Climate Event That Could Shape This Year's Atlantic Crossing Season

Climate scientists around the world are closely monitoring what is rapidly developing into one of the strongest El Niño events of recent decades.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there is a high probability that the current El Niño event will strengthen rapidly over the coming months, with sea surface temperature anomalies in parts of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific already exceeding two degrees Celsius above average. What Exactly Is El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a natural climate cycle that develops every two to seven years. During an El Niño event, the trade winds that normally push warm surface water westward across the Pacific weaken. As a result, vast amounts of warm water spread eastward toward the coast of South America.
The Pacific Ocean covers nearly one-third of the Earth's surface, so changes in its temperature have far-reaching consequences. The atmosphere responds to this enormous release of heat, altering wind patterns, rainfall, storm tracks and temperatures across much of the globe.
While El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon, scientists also point out that today's warmer oceans—driven by long-term climate change—can amplify some of its effects, making extreme weather events even more intense.
Global Weather Impacts
Every El Niño is unique, but scientists have identified several well-established patterns.
In the Pacific Ocean, tropical cyclone activity often increases, particularly across the central and eastern Pacific. Countries around the western Pacific, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and parts of Australia, frequently experience hotter and drier conditions, increasing the risk of drought and wildfires.
Along the west coast of North and South America, warmer Pacific waters often bring heavier rainfall and an increased risk of flooding. California can experience wetter winters, while Peru and Ecuador sometimes face intense rainfall events that affect agriculture, infrastructure and fisheries.
In North America, the southern United States generally experiences cooler and wetter winter conditions, while the northern states often see milder-than-average temperatures.
Across Europe, the effects are generally weaker and less predictable because Europe is far from the tropical Pacific.
Nevertheless, El Niño can influence the position of the jet stream and atmospheric circulation, sometimes contributing to warmer-than-average conditions across parts of northern Europe while altering rainfall patterns around the Mediterranean. Why Sailors Should Pay Attention
For those planning an Atlantic crossing, perhaps the most significant consequence of El Niño is its influence on the Atlantic hurricane season.
A stronger El Niño usually increases vertical wind shear over the tropical Atlantic. Wind shear disrupts the vertical structure of tropical storms, making it much harder for hurricanes to form and intensify.
Because of this, meteorologists generally expect below-average Atlantic hurricane activity during strong El Niño years. Recent forecast updates have already lowered expectations for the number of named storms and major hurricanes during the 2026 Atlantic season as confidence in a strong El Niño has increased.
This does not mean hurricanes cannot occur. History has shown that even quiet hurricane seasons can produce powerful storms. However, statistically, the overall probability of hurricane development across the tropical Atlantic is reduced during strong El Niño years.
What Does This Mean for Atlantic Crossings?
The traditional Atlantic crossing season begins after the official hurricane season is drawing to a close, with most cruising rallies departing between November and January.
If the current forecasts prove correct, a strong El Niño could provide an additional advantage by suppressing late-season tropical cyclone development in the Atlantic. Combined with the normally stable northeast trade winds of early winter, this may create favourable conditions for ocean passages.
